Rocket secured its place in railway history after winning the Rainhill trials, in 1829. This competition was to decide which locomotive candidate would be used to pull the trains on the Liverpool and Manchester Railway (the world’s first inter-city passenger railway line), opening the following year.
The arrival of Stephenson’s Rocket in Manchester for the first time in 180 years is a momentous occasion, and this is a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity to see this iconic symbol of the Industrial Revolution in the city where it sparked ‘railway mania’.
Join us for an interactive talk (starting at 11.30am) to learn all about the iconic Rocket locomotive. Find out how a steam train works, how the first inter-city railway made history right here in Manchester and how Rocket changed our world and the way we travel forever!
The talk will be followed by a visit to the Grade I listed booking office and first class waiting rooms of the world’s oldest surviving passenger railway station, where we’ll also have the opportunity to explore the “Destination Stations” and “Revolutionary Railroad” exhibitions.
Members are also encouraged to stay for an informal networking time in a nearby location.
Please make sure you book your place so that we know you’re coming!
